Is it possible to give a public space a facelift by refurbishing a single house? The Danish Association for Building and Landscape Culture, together with Realdania By & Byg, has set out to answer this question via a test project: Out-of-place Buildings in Danish Towns and Cities.
Towns and cities throughout Denmark are home to picturesque and historic urban spaces. Many of these spaces are well-preserved, and serve to stimulate retailing and tourism and attract new residents. On the other hand, some areas could benefit from a bit of a facelift. Perhaps, over the years, one building on a street has fallen into a state of dilapidation, or has an appearance that could be altered to better fit the surrounding area. The Danish Association for Building and Landscape Culture, together with Realdania By & Byg, has risen to meet this challenge by launching a new project: Out-of-place Buildings in Danish Towns and Cities.
As part of the project, Realdania By & Byg will purchase one to three properties and rebuild them so that they once again grace the urban spaces in which they stand. The lessons learned from the project will form the basis of a book with inspiration for other projects and which will show how even minor changes can make a positive difference and benefit towns and cities - and city-dwellers - throughout Denmark.
Realdania By & Byg has purchased a town house in Faaborg which has been on the market for a number of years. The house at Strandgade 4, Faaborg, has now been renovated, and we are looking for one or two additional properties to renovate as part of the project. Once the project has reached its conclusion, the knowledge gained will form the basis of a book with tips and inspiration for similar projects.
